Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Perform analysis
   • Set up and optimise instruments to suit sample/test requirements
   • Measure analyte response for standards, validation checks and samples
   • Conduct sufficient measurements to obtain reliable data
   • Return instruments to standby or shutdown condition as required
2. Develop an analysis plan with supervisor
   • Liaise with client or sample provider to determine test requirements and sample characteristics
3. Record sample description, compare with specification, record and report discrepancies
4. Confirm suitable sample preparation methods, quantification and analytical techniques with supervisor
5. Schedule analysis using workplace procedures
6. Reduce the complexity of the sample
   • Obtain a representative analytical portion of the laboratory sample
7. Prepare validation checks for analytical portions
8. Use workplace procedures to simplify the sample matrix
9. Conduct tests to ensure that sample preparation is complete
10. Apply quantification method
    • Add modifiers to remove/minimise interferences
11. Conduct preliminary analysis to estimate analyte concentration
12. Match the concentration of analyte in the sample with the working range of the instrument
13. Prepare calibration standards to suit quantification method
    • Set up and optimise instruments to suit sample/test requirements
14. Measure analyte response for standards, validation checks and samples
15. Conduct sufficient measurements to obtain reliable data
16. Return instruments to standby or shutdown condition as required
17. Process and analyse data
    • Confirm data is the result of valid measurements
18. Perform required calculations and ensure results are consistent with estimations and expectations
19. Record results with the appropriate accuracy, precision units and uncertainty
20. Analyse trends in data and/or results and report out-of-specification or atypical results promptly to appropriate personnel
21. Troubleshoot analytical procedure or equipment problems which have led to atypical data or results
22. Maintain laboratory records
    • Make entries on report forms or into a laboratory information management system accurately calculating, recording or transcribing data as required
23. Ensure traceability of sample from receipt to reporting of results
